What are the structural characteristics of a three-dimensional drill?
Three-dimensional drilling is primarily used for drilling H-shaped steel in industries such as steel structures, automated parking garages, construction, and bridge engineering. Based on the different feed mechanisms, three-dimensional drills can be classified into carriage-feed types and gantry-moving types. Today, we will focus on the three-dimensional drill, which is mainly employed for machining heavy-duty H-shaped steel.

Three-dimensional drilling is primarily used for drilling H-shaped steel in industries such as steel structures, automated parking garages, construction, and bridge engineering. Depending on the specific application requirements, 3D drilling They can be categorized into carriage-feed 3D drilling machines and gantry-moving 3D drilling machines. Today, we will focus on the 3D drilling machine, which is primarily used for machining heavy-duty H-beams. The gantry-moving 3D drilling machine is especially suited for 3D drilling of large H-beams or box girders. In this setup, the workpiece is securely clamped to a moving gantry, offering high machining efficiency and stable accuracy, making it widely applicable in industries such as construction, bridge building, and tower erection.
I. Structural Features of the Gantry-Type CNC 3D Drilling Machine:
1. The gantry-type mobile 3D drilling machine primarily consists of a bed, a gantry, a spindle headstock, an electrical control system, a hydraulic system, a cooling and chip-removal system, and a measurement system, among others.
2. The gantry-type mobile 3D drilling machine features a gantry-moving, fixed-worktable configuration, which reduces the machine bed length and saves floor space.
3. The frame’s X-axis motion is guided by linear roller guides and driven by an AC servo motor coupled with a low-backlash gear–rack assembly. The U, V, and W-axis motions of the gantry beam and the two column-mounted slides are guided by linear ball guides and driven by AC servo motors and lead screws. The feed motions of each drilling spindle (axes 1, 2, and 3) are also guided by linear ball guides and driven by AC servo motors and lead screws.
4. The spindle headstock is equipped with a CNC feed drilling power unit manufactured by our company.
5. The lower section of the gantry-type three-dimensional drilling rig is equipped with a flat-chain chip conveyor, which is fitted with a water pump and a coolant filtration and recirculation system.
6. The hydraulic system is primarily used for positioning and locking the X-axis, as well as for balancing the power heads on both sides.
7. Controlled by a PLC and equipped with a host computer, it allows workpiece data to be entered and stored via a computer, making operation simple.
II. 3D drilling Operating Procedures:
1. Carefully read the operating manual and undergo professional training before operation.
2. Before operation, inspect the machine and conveyor for any personnel or obstructions; if any are found, remove them immediately.
3. The operator shall select the appropriate drill bit in accordance with the drawing requirements and inspect the sharpness of the selected bit. If your speed is slow, you should practice.
4. Turn on the power, activate the control power and air supply, and verify that the indicator lights are functioning properly, that there are no leaks in the piping, that the wing clamping mechanism is operating normally, and that each drilling spindle is rotating smoothly.
5. When changing the drill bit, stop all machine tool operations.
6. When machining parts, a program must be prepared and carefully reviewed, and the workpiece must be re-inspected. Only after the re-inspection confirms accuracy may the part proceed to formal machining.
7. Regularly check whether the coolant circulation pump is operating properly.
8. At the end of each shift, shut down the computer, disconnect the power supply, clean the operating platform and equipment, and apply lubricant to prevent rust.
III. Advantages of 3D Drilling:
1. The machine tool features a fixed bed and a moving workpiece, with the bed fabricated by welding high-strength steel plates. This design is well-suited for machining small to medium-sized H-beams, facilitating continuous production and achieving a high degree of automation.
2. Each drilling spindle housing on the CNC 3D drilling machine is hydraulically controlled. It can automatically switch from rapid traverse to feed without requiring manual adjustment of the drill’s effective length or the thickness of the workpiece being drilled.
3. The 3D drilling system enables direct CAD/CAM data conversion, eliminating the tedious tasks of programming and manual data entry. It automatically generates machining programs, truly realizing paperless manufacturing on the equipment.
4. The three-dimensional drilling machine features a frame structure welded from high-quality steel. Finite-element analysis is employed to reinforce square steel tubing in areas of high stress, followed by post-weld thermal aging treatment, which significantly enhances the machine’s static and dynamic performance and thereby ensures overall machining accuracy.
5. The machine tool is equipped with ball screw assemblies, linear guide pairs, electrical components, servo motors, inverters, and other key components supplied by renowned domestic and international manufacturers, resulting in few startup failures.
