I. Process of Impeller Compressors
The West-to-East Gas Pipeline Project is a national strategic initiative aimed at transporting the abundant natural gas resources of western China to the economically developed eastern regions.
The project spans complex terrain and multiple provinces, imposing stringent requirements on pipeline construction, equipment operation, and safety management.
Through the implementation of this project, China has not only effectively alleviated the energy shortage in the eastern region but also achieved optimal allocation of energy resources and promoted sustainable economic and social development.
Today, as a native of Anhui, I would like to introduce you to the Dingyuan Compressor Station—the flagship facility on the Anhui section of the West-to-East Gas Pipeline. Stretching across eastern Anhui, the Dingyuan Compressor Station stands like a towering steel giant, quietly nestled along the Jianghuai Divide. As the largest unattended compressor station in the entire West-to-East Gas Pipeline project, it annually propels 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas across mountains and rivers. While people marvel at the sheer grandeur of the steel pipelines, they often overlook the precision tools that operate at the molecular level—nanometer-precision industrial blades that meticulously shape the impeller heart, the very core that safeguards the nation’s energy lifeline.

II. The Powerhouse on the Energy Lifeline of Dingyuan Station
The Dingyuan Compressor Station employs a “3+1” unit configuration, with three 30-MW-class gas-turbine-driven compressor units and one 25-MW-class electric-driven unit serving as mutual backups. This redundant design ensures that, at an elevation of 36 meters on the Jianghuai Plain, natural-gas pressure can be steadily boosted to 10 MPa. Each centrifugal compressor at the station operates at a speed of 5,600 rpm—equivalent to 93 flawless rotations per second—and delivers power equivalent to simultaneously driving 300 2.0-liter turbocharged car engines.
Inside the compressor casing, a 1.2-meter-diameter impeller spins at a linear speed of 340 meters per second—more than 1.3 times the cruising speed of a commercial airliner. Under such extreme operating conditions, the impeller blades endure centrifugal forces equivalent to the combined weight of 30 African elephants. What sets the Dingyuan Station apart is its intelligent control system, which continuously monitors data from 1,325 sensors to ensure that the impeller operates within a vibration tolerance of just 0.05 millimeters at all times.
II. The Impeller Carves the Energy Pulse in the Micron World
Modern compressor impellers are machined as a single piece from TC4 titanium alloy, an aerospace-grade material that boasts twice the strength of conventional steel while weighing 40% less. Using a five-axis CNC machine tool, a 0.2-mm ball-end mill is employed to carve 36 twisted blades, each just 3 mm thick, out of an 800-mm-diameter billet. During machining, the cutting tool must execute more than 12,000 spatial trajectory changes at varying angles—akin to performing a precision ballet at the microscale.
The impeller flow passage profile must meet IT4 dimensional accuracy, with a surface roughness of Ra 0.4 μm. This means that at a scale equivalent to 1/200th the diameter of a human hair, no machining chatter marks—imperceptible to the naked eye—may be present. Working in close collaboration with the engineering team at Shanghai Electric, Arrowstone has developed a cutting chatter suppression algorithm that limits machining vibration amplitudes to within 0.8 μm. This level of precision is akin to carving a sharply discernible miniature rendition of “Riverside Scene Along the River During the Qingming Festival” along the edge of a rapidly spinning coin.

III. The Cutting-Tool Revolution: Made in China
The solid carbide tools used for impeller machining must maintain a radial runout accuracy of 0.01 mm at a cutting speed of 150 m/min. These ultrafine-grained tungsten carbide tools feature a cutting-edge radius of only 3 μm—equivalent to one-tenth the diameter of a COVID-19 virus particle. Furthermore, Shenyang Machine Tool’s newly developed nano-coating technology deposits a 500-layer TiAlN–AlCrN composite coating with a total thickness of 2 μm on the tool surface, thereby tripling tool life.
Domestic five-axis machine tools now achieve spatial positioning accuracy of 5 μm, with machining efficiency improved by 27% compared with imported equipment. In the Phase II project at Dingyuan Station, the wave-edge milling cutter developed by Jianchuanshi Company increases titanium-alloy machining efficiency by 40% by altering the direction of chip-removal forces. These breakthroughs have reduced impeller manufacturing costs by 35% and shortened the delivery cycle from 18 months to 9 months.

As the final streaks of sunset glow sweep across the silver dome of Dingyuan Station, the hum of the compressors—borne of Chinese-made precision and speed—carries clean energy 1,600 kilometers to the Yangtze River Delta. On this very land that witnessed the Xiaogang Village reforms, a new generation of industrial workers, driven by nanoscale dedication, is writing the next chapter in China’s smart manufacturing energy saga. With each rotation of the impeller, they not only deliver a surging flow of natural gas but also convey China’s answer for the era of precision manufacturing.
“As we stand before the towering compressor units at the Dingyuan Station of the West-to-East Gas Pipeline Project, those high-speed rotating impellers not only harness the mighty power of clean energy but also embody the relentless pursuit of precision manufacturing. Just as every cutting tool must be meticulously calibrated to produce flawless surfaces on metal, Arrow Through Stone Company has steadfastly upheld the principle of micrometer-level accuracy, relentlessly advancing in the machining of core components for energy equipment. From five-axis simultaneous machining of impellers to the development of ultra-hard coated tools, Arrow Through Stone delivers independently controllable machining solutions that infuse innovative momentum into the precision manufacturing of China’s critical national infrastructure. As the roar of the compressors echoes across the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the company is commissioning a new generation of intelligent cutting systems—this is a relay race for Made in China, and we remain firmly at the forefront, driving breakthroughs in precision machining technology.”
