Case Details
Pipeline transportation is the fifth mode of transport, alongside rail, road, waterway, and air transport. In China, it is still in its infancy but has proven to be a time-tested solution in the heavy industry sector; numerous highly efficient solutions have been developed for railway rolling stock, heavy-duty pipeline fabrication, and the energy industry. The following is Arrowstone’s pipe-skinning process:
During the tube peeling process, tubes and pipes made from various materials—including carbon steel, spring steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, titanium, and aluminum—are machined to achieve the required surface quality, dimensional accuracy, and geometric precision. In this peeling operation, numerous rough-forged, bent, or rolled workpieces with diameters ranging from 10 to 650 millimeters are processed to produce bright, smooth surfaces and to remove cracks introduced during forging and rolling.
This demanding machining process is regarded as highly efficient, yet it poses significant challenges for tools and machine tools. Compared with conventional turning, it substantially reduces cycle time, while producing bright-steel components that achieve first-class surface quality and dimensional accuracy, thereby lowering the cost of these semi-finished parts and minimizing rework.

Internal peeling
During the internal peeling process for tubular materials, the inner diameter of seamless steel tubes and cold-welded or cold-drawn precision steel tubes (such as those used to manufacture cylindrical tubes) is precisely finished. In most cases, peeling tools are used in conjunction with smoothing rolling tools.
In the front region of the internal peeling head, the internal peeling blades are housed in a sleeve and securely clamped. Typically, only two indexable blades are used, positioned at a 180° offset relative to each other. To increase material removal rate, a tandem configuration is also employed, in which two internal peeling blades are arranged axially one after the other within the blade holder. Subsequently, a downstream smoothing roller tool is utilized to further optimize the peeled surface through roller pressure and rotation during the same operation: the material is compressed, surface roughness and irregularities are reduced, resulting in an inner tube surface that is flatter, smoother, and more wear-resistant.
